Welcome to

William Ransom!

Welcome to William Ransom - we are a two-form entry (60 children per year group), state-funded, non-selective community primary school for children of Reception age (4 years old) through to Year 6 (11 years old) in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

WR is a happy, ambitious and inclusive school. Our teaching team is characterised by its dynamic, creative and caring approach. We are always seeking to learn and improve and we go the extra mile for our pupils to have the opportunity to do the same. We have a very strong sense of community here and we work hand-in-hand with our parents, as partners, to offer every child as many opportunities as we can.

Respect

Respect in school is all about treating each other like we'd want to be treated ourselves. It means being truthful and working together with our friends, teachers and the William Ransom community. By embracing honesty, and cooperation, we create a space where learning can thrive, making school a much more enjoyable place for all!

Effort

Izzy in Year 6 explains that effort is, “putting in 100%”. It helps you succeed and be the best you can be. Resilience is an important part of this. When things get tough, it's all about picking yourself up and trying again instead of giving up. So, whether it’s tackling a challenge or working on a group project, putting in that extra effort can make all the difference!

Kindness

Sophie in Yr 2 explains that 'Kindness at William Ransom is about being considerate and accepting of everyone, regardless of their differences. When we show kindness to our classmates, it creates a welcoming environment where everyone feels included. A simple smile or a helping hand can really brighten someone’s day, making William Ransom a much nicer place to be.

Learning Environment

At WR we regularly look at different ways of making sure our learning environments are places where every child can flourish. We are currently creating a school library to support and inspire every child to develop a positive relationship with books and reading, while also embracing digital technology to offer every child in KS2 access to a Chromebook. Our History

William Ransom & Son was founded by William Ransom, a Quaker and botanist. In 1845 he established his own pharmacy in Hitchin and manufactured herbal preparations using raw materials grown at Ransom farm in Hitchin. He went on to manufacture medicinal drugs and essences. Today, the Ransom Group owns various health brands focussed on natural.

Our Curriculum

All staff and Governors play a key role in shaping our curriculum and in its continual evolution to meet the ever-changing needs of the children who attend WR. We want all children here to enjoy their learning journey and to be engaged and inspired, while also developing a strong independent skill set to help them thrive in whatever comes next.

Positive Mental Health

We have a dedicated Mental Health Team within the school and are the base school for the NHS Mental Health Support Team. We offer exciting approaches to positive whole school mental health like our 'Let Grow' project. We offer a wide range of supportive sessions for children and there is always a welcoming open door to Sycamore Office for anyone who needs it!

Empowering Children

We foster a sense of ownership and responsibility in every child at WR for their learning, attitude and conduct. This is underpinned by our school environment, our marking and feedback policy, our behaviour policy and the many additional roles, experiences and opportunities open to children at WR.
