Forces, Materials and Space in Year 5

Science in Year 5

Year 5 have covered a lot in Science already this year, starting with our topic on Forces, where we conducted many different experiments and investigations to discover more about how they work. We started by looking at air resistance, where the children made their own parachutes and decided on which variables they wanted to test before moving on to using Newton meters to measure the weight needed to drag a show over different surfaces. After Forces we moved on to look at materials, learning about the different types and their properties as well as how to separate them and the effects they have on things like thermal insulation. We took a little detour recently to join a live lesson with NASA scientist Branelle Rodriguez in preparation for our next topic on Space and next week's trip to Airbus in Stevenage.
