Learning Environment
At WR we regularly look at different ways of making sure our learning environments are places where every child can flourish. We are currently creating a school library to support and inspire every child to develop a positive relationship with books and reading, while also embracing digital technology to offer every child in KS2 access to a Chromebook.
Thanks to the incredible hard work of our parents and our SPA (School and Parents Association) our school library is getting closer and closer to completion. Regular visits to our new library are organised for all classes to give children the opportunity to explore our range of fiction and non-fiction. Special book displays are changed regularly to inspire and excite children with special topics such as festivals, books on neurodiversity or books to help children with challenges. Children enjoy guided reading sessions and 1:1 reading in the library, using our new comfortable and inviting furniture. There are also laptops for the children to use the space for digital research and games to help develop social skils.
The library is also our wellbeing space - it is available to children who need adult support or other children to play with during break or lunchtime.
Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of our SPA (School and Parents Association), since September 2024, every child in Years 4, 5 and 6 now accesses digital learning through chromebooks. This has enabled every child to have access to mobile digital technology and to be able to use that technology for longer periods of the week. It allows them to use digital technology to support and further their understanding in other curriculum areas, as well as accessing a weekly discreet Computing lesson. Allowing our children to develop familiarity with chromebooks also better prepares them for the next step in their education, as all three of the secondary schools in Hitchin use Chromebooks from Year 7. As both our children and staff become more familiar with this new technology it will be utilised more and more to inspire, engage and deepen children's curriculum knowledge and skills.
