Maths Day!

We had had an exciting Maths Day where the whole school spent the day making cross-curricular links with their Maths knowledge!

We started the day with a text in each class. These stories took on a range of different Maths topics and allowed the children to see how number can be woven into stories. EYFS look at One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab.' A book that looks at the number associations we can make with different animals. KS1 took number slightly further and explored the world of Digitaria, looking at the value of 0 and whether 0 always has a home. KS2 broadened their understanding of number with Y3 & 4 having to organise and sort 365 penguins and Y5 & Y6 having to solve the puzzle of the missing fraction! All activities allowed for collaborative group work and investigative skills to be put into action. We also heard a lot of great mathematical talk going on amongst the children too!

We continued the theme of number stories and every child had the opportunity to invent and create their own. KS1 looked at common number stories such as 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and created their own take of this, where as KS2 went a step further and produced simple number stories that are now on display in KS1 classrooms. KS2 particularly enjoyed the planning process behind this and were very excited to be making a story for the younger children to read. It also threw up challenges they did not foresee, such as whether their story was easy enough to follow!

Our afternoon looked at the theme of shape, in particular tessellation. The children all investigated the different ways shapes can tessellate and some even went on to see what different shapes tessellated with each other. Y6 chose to do this on the computers, showing how shape can be explored in another curriculum area. KS2 took this a step further and used cardboard to generate their own tessellating patterns. Each class used a different medium to work with and every produced some individual artwork.

Maths Day enabled the children to have the opportunity to strengthen their Maths understanding and knowledge across a range of subjects and undertake lots of collaborative learning and Mathematical talk. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
