Year 5 Viking Day
Yesterday, Year 5 were lucky enough to take part in a whole day dedicated to our learning about Vikings!
We had an amazing teacher, ‘Irik the Viking’, to teach us lots about many different elements of Viking life. He started with lots of interesting information regarding the Vikings first coming to Britain and the history of how the Viking era unfolded. We learnt many new and interesting facts to supplement what we had learnt so far in our History lessons.
We took part in a quiz and were able to see and hold replica Viking artefacts to increase our understanding about Viking life and on the battlefield!
In the afternoon we got to learn about weaponry and were able to touch a Viking sword (if we wanted to.) We learnt some battle cries and how to move in formation as a team. Excitingly, we also had a go at spear fighting (but we used a broom handle) which was a method that Viking children used to build upper body strength by sitting feet to feet on the floor and pulling until we had won the ‘spear’ – it was very even between Willow and Rowan!
We had a wonderful day of learning – here are just some photos that we took of the day – I’m sure the children will tell you lots more about it if you asked them!
