Holly’s History Trip
Today Year One headed off to the Shuttleworth Collection to support our work on Pioneers of Flight as part of the History curriculum.
We spent the morning doing a range of interesting activities. We experienced what it was like to sit inside an old passenger plane with nowhere for luggage and no toilet! The children also learnt about camouflage and why planes were painted different colours on the top and bottom and organised a timeline of aeroplanes from 1903 to the current day. Amy Johnson was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia and the children built on their classroom learning including looking at landscapes she would have flown over. We even saw planes like the one the Wright Brothers flew and gliders similar to Otto Lilienthal’s. Lots of questions and lots of facts learnt!
We also got to try on some hats and gloves that pilots used to wear.
fter lunch we had a bumpy trip on a vintage bus and saw some sheep and an emu!
We finished the day with some sketching in the hangars and then headed back to school, tired but happy, on the coach.
