Design & Technology

Our unit of work in Design & Technology this term started with exploring which fruits and vegetables grow in the UK. We then discussed ‘seasonality’ and knowing when different fruits and vegetables are naturally ripe and ready to eat. Through lots of discussion, we worked out together why seasonal foods are better for us and for the environment and how importing goods affects us all. Sorting the fruit and vegetables into their ‘ripe’ months proved particularly enjoyable.

In the next few weeks, we will be designing, preparing and cooking meals which promote seasonal food. Before we start this process, we had a tasting session of some new foods (both imported and home grown). Lots of children admitted that they didn’t like trying new foods, however, we encouraged each other because it’s healthier to eat a varied diet. The children worked with a partner to consider the appearance and smell of each item before sampling. Then, they discussed the texture and taste and finally decided whether they liked it or not.

Here are some photos of the fruit and vegetable sorting and tasting!
